At 3.2-megapixels, the camera on the G1 Android phone takes higher resolution photos than the Apple iPhone 3G's 2.0-megapixel camera. So it was disappointing to find that the G1 camera produced indoor photos with a strong blue tint.
Photos of objects within about 10 feet of the camera were sharp, but photos of more distant subjects were a bit fuzzy, even though the camera features auto-focus. Despite the high resolution of the camera, the G1 unfortunately does not stand up to the Apple iPhone 3G in this area.
The G1 camera has zoom and auto-focus, but it lacks a flash and video recording -- features that are standard on many smart phones currently on the market. The G1 also does not provide editing options, such as the ability to adjust light balance, which might help improve the photo quality and are standard on many other handsets currently on the market.
Most of the G1 phone's basic functions are linked to Google, and users must sign up for Gmail. As a result, people who use the G1 Android phone currently offered by T-Mobile have to sign up for Internet service -- but Web options on this phone such as Android Market are one of its major selling points, so this probably will not be a problem for most people.
Users can receive emails through Gmail on the G1 phone, and contacts from users' Google online accounts are synced to the contacts on the phone. The calendar on the G1 also syncs with the user's Google account, and some people have complained that the G1 only allows users to connect to one Gmail account -- not multiple business and personal accounts that some people might have. Google maps are easy to access, by touching the maps shortcut under applications.
The G1 Android phone can also be set up to receive emails from up to five POP3 and IMAP email accounts, but out of the box the G1 from T-Mobile does not support Microsoft Exchange to give users access to corporate email. Since the G1's launch, third-party applications to support direct push synchronization with a Microsoft Exchange Server have begun to pop up. As mentioned earlier, users can customize the application shortcuts they want on three home screens on the G1.
The G1 Android phone from T-Mobile runs on an 1150 mAh Li-Ion battery and is rated for five hours of talk time and 5.41 days of standby time. The handset has 128 MB of memory, with an easily accessible slot on the outside of the phone to expand the memory with a microSD Memory Card. The G1 also has Wi-Fi, which can be turned on by pressing "menu," "settings" and then "wireless controls."
